There are so many big issues on the political and social radar, that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and on LGBTI communities, that it can be easy for important things to be overlooked. Quite often we don’t discuss sexuality in relation to cultural identity and vice versa.
This exhibition allows LGBTI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to express what is important to us. It’s an opportunity to creatively discuss gender equality, marriage equality, health issues, social and political issues and cultural identity.
We have a dynamic group of artists, from a variety of disciplines, willing to share their experiences and their stories, coming together to highlight and celebrate what it means to be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex. Identity is fluid. The importance of this show is not only felt by the artists who exhibit but also by those who support the show. Opening night is an opportunity for our artists to celebrate with a strong community of people who are truly supportive of the show, the artists, the gallery and what Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative strives for as a collective of diverse people.
