Newsagency Gallery presents Disco Diaries, an exhibition by 6 local and international artists working on the theme of the Disco, as a metaphor for celebration in LGBTQI culture. These artists meet at the Hollywood Hotel sharing their own disco tales of triumph and tragedy. Suddenly you’re part of the conversation, a dialogue about the evolution of queer iconography and how it addresses equality and gender issues in contemporary society.
The disco symbolises ‘the temple’ in gay culture, a place to worship, where resonating light, sound and colour take on a Bacchanalian fervor. The pure pleasure of dance, the uninhibited freedom of dress, sex and attitude, juxtapose with harsh reality at night’s end - when make-up-smeared drag queens take home their new-found, innocent loves. The broken glass and shattered souls of those who survived the night - only to face the blinding light of Sunday morning.
Disco Diaries will showcase a stable of Newsagency Gallery artists including Jose Herrera, Malcolm Smith, Pe Pe, Benoit+Bo, Polly Williams and Nini Sum who will show paintings, photography and limited silk screen prints. At the launch on the 27th of February, the visual artists will be joined by Stephan Carrington and Drag Queen Connie Carter at the Hollywood, where they will perform a cabaret show inspired by the mirror ball. In addition a disco glamour event will be presented by Alex Greenwich Independent MP for Sydney and important fund raising will be held on the night for the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.
Surry Hills’ Hollywood Hotel is an iconic Sydney venue, graced with warm art Deco interiors, a glamorous history and nestled in the heart of Mardi Gras culture. ‘Momentum’ is the theme the 2016 festival and this exhibition will resonate with symbols, colour and movement as the artists translate queer culture through their work.
