The Bearded Man Project

  • blank_space gallery 374 Crown Street Surry Hills, NSW, 2010 Australia

"It just started when I painted one bearded guy, I felt I wanted to paint more, I liked what the beard did to the face, focusing attention on the eyes, showcasing the nose, creating a frame that somehow completes". From that one little painting, artist Jeff Waterman formed a mission to search for and ask people to sit for him.

"I'm always indebted and grateful, surprised that people accept, it compels me to honor them with a dignified portrayal, and to express something true about their character.

This series of oil portraits showcases contemporary male presence & beauty without resorting to what I find has become the omnipresent & somewhat oppressive resort to sexualizing, mythologizing, idealization and sentimentality in our culture.

"We are so much more than our abs, bums, sneers & pouts, so much more".
