Cream of the 2011 Parade Crop Honoured with Awards
At its Volunteer Thank You function on the 1st of April, New Mardi Gras (NMG) announced the winners of the Parade Awards, the stars of this year’s “Say Something” Mardi Gras Parade.
Of the 135 entries in this year’s Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade five in particular were picked for their quality and message:
Best Costume: Gayola Crayons
Say Something Award: ACON Aboriginal Project
Best Float: Black Dog Institute
Best Choreography: Lifesavers with Pride
Judges Award: People with Disability Australia
“During 2010 we went out to the community and asked people what they wanted from the Parade,” said Parade Producer Vicktor Petroff. “The It’s Your Parade consultation gave us a very clear message that the creative quality of the Parade needed to be improved.”
“The great thing about this year’s Say Something campaign leading up to Parade was that it really underpinned the creative process for many entries. We encouraged entrants to really define what they wanted to say and that got their creative juices flowing.”
“Thanks must got to Ignatius Jones as Consultant Creative Director for the inspirational role he played as well as our Parade Creative team who designed New Mardi Gras’ own contributions as well as helping other community entries.”
“The winners deserve tremendous praise for their impact on the Parade. Great costuming, choreography and impactful, meaningful floats are crucial in making the Parade enjoyable for the audience on the street and watching at home on television.”
