Mardi Gras announces Short Story Competition
New Mardi Gras (NMG) today announced the opening of its short story competition, inviting members and friends of the LGBTQI community to submit works under 750 words. With a theme in 2012 of ‘Heroes’, the Mardi Gras Short Story Competition encourages writers to interpret the theme however they wish.
The 2012 Short Story Competition has an expanded line-up of prizes on offer, including big cash awards. First place will take home a $2500 prize package, consisting of a $2000 cash prize, provided by the CAL Cultural Fund and a $500 Sydney Writers’ Centre course voucher!
The much-loved competition offers the chance for talented writers to have their works published on the Mardi Gras website throughout the duration of the 2012 Festival as well as in LGBTQI e-books. Selected authors have also been invited to have their work published in Australian short story anthologies.
Entries must be received by 5pm on January 7th 2012. Entrants need not identify as LGBTQI, but the story must be LGBTQI themed.
In 2011, the Mardi Gras Short Story Competition Winners event was held at Mardi Gras’ Queer Thinking event.
Sam Sweedman, Festival Program Manager, said of this year’s competition, “We have been thrilled with the level of support the competition receives from bookshops and writing centres all over Sydney. To now also have the support of the CAL Cultural Fund means we can expect even more entries in what is already a highly popular writing competition. We look forward to seeing the results!”
