Parade 2011 applications now open
The journey to Parade 2011 began in earnest this week with NMG releasing its Parade Entry Kit online, including a new set of criteria for who is eligible to participate to reflect feedback from its community forum on the future of the Parade earlier in 2010.
The Kit is available for download from www.mardigras.org.au/kit from 8am on 17th November.
As well as containing an introduction from the newly announced Consulting Artistic Director of the Parade, Ignatius Jones, it provides all the necessary information required to submit a Parade entry. It also includes new criteria defining eligibility to be part of the Parade.
After much debate in the run-up to the 2010 Parade about the exclusion of Animal Liberation NMG set up the It’s Your Parade community forum to get feedback on who should be able to participate.
The Entrant Criteria has been developed on the back of that process and is set out clearly in the kit.
All applications from GLBTQ people or a GLBTQ organisation are welcome, whether their entry is focused on GLBTQ-related messages or not.
Applications from people or organisations which are not part of the GLBTQ community are also welcome so long as the focus of their entry is a clear message of support or celebration relating to GLBTQ people.
Only applications from non-GLBTQ groups or individuals who are not promoting a positive GLBTQ-related message will be refused entry.
“With this year’s Parade Entry Kit we have much clearer criteria,” said Michael Rolik, CEO of New Mardi Gras. “We’ve ensured that it’s easy to understand how to take part in the Parade, and we can’t wait to see applications from a range of groups.
“Whether you’ve taken part for years or you’re interested in being involved for the first time, we hope you’ll get involved in making the 2011 Parade the most diverse, colourful and exciting we’ve had in years.”
Expressions of interest are open from Wednesday morning and will be taken until mid-January.
