Songs Jessye's Sung

Songs Jessye's Sung

Soprano Julia Wee and pianist Lucus Allerton present a musical program inspired by the great African-American soprano Jessye Norman and the struggle for civil liberties and freedoms. The program includes spirituals and songs by Mahler and Strauss. Come and be enveloped in this rapturous program of music that will move you with its tales of battles fought and won in the journey of life and love.

The September 2017 debut performance of this program for Artsong Canberra led one reviewer to write: Julia “established an immediate, genuine rapport with her audience” and “invested the song with a strength and emotion that was very moving.” “The piano accompaniment for this work by Lucus Allerton was especially fine.”

For this performance, Julia and Lucus will be joined by guest artist Pamela Andrews. All three first met as students at the ANU School of Music, Canberra. Each finding their own way after graduating, this is the first time they have come together again to give this very special presentation (which may involve Julia in more than just a little bit of drag!).

"The term “Sissy” is used amongst Asian and Pacific queer communities as a term of endearment and sisterhood. Queer Art After Hours

Queer Art After Hours

Queer Art After Hours returns after last year’s hugely successful inaugural event. Once again, the Art Gallery of New South Wales will go queer, with an explosion of queer art around every corner.
On the main stage, MCs Fancy Piece host a line-up of Sydney’s cutting-edge queer musicians, DJs and performers: Marcus Whale, Rainbow Chan, Brendan de la Hay, DJ Yung Brujo, DJ Ayebatonye, and performance collective Gang of She.

Elsewhere in the Gallery, take a tongue-in-cheek art tour with Verushka Darling, a life drawing class with dominatrix Mistress Tokyo as your model, or have a profound coffee cup reading with artist Nicole Barakat. Watch out for The Huxleys, whose iridescent and glamourous creations might pop out from any corner!

And don’t miss the chance to see the work of one of the most important figures in queer art history in the acclaimed exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: the perfect medium. Emerging during the wave of gay activism and pride that also birthed the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Mapplethorpe chronicled his deep involvement in New York’s gay scene and immortalised the idols of the 1970s and 1980s, including lifelong muse Patti Smith. Whether he was photographing a figure, a fetish or a flower, Mapplethorpe’s unflinching quest for beauty has an enduring political and artistic resonance.

Check out the full info on the performers and the Mapplethorpe exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW site here.

The King's Singers

The King’s Singers - GOLD

With “voices of spun gold” (BBC Music Magazine), The King’s Singers are masters of vocal harmony. These polished entertainers will sing a mix of ancient and contemporary, classical and popular, all delivered with “pinpoint precision and total rapport” (The Times, UK).

This irresistibly charismatic ensemble performs on their whistle-stop ‘Gold’ world tour to celebrate 50 years in the business. Double Grammy® Awards winners, The King’s Singers are beloved the world over, from London’s Royal Albert Hall to New York’s Carnegie Hall, and now – for one perfromance only – at Sydney’s majestic St Mary’s Cathedral.

They will be joined by special guests the Choristers of St Mary’s Cathedral Choir – who will themselves be celebrating the 200th anniversary of their founding.

This celebratory programme will feature especially commissioned anniversary pieces by some of the worlds great contemporary choral composers including Nico Muhly, Bob Chilcott and Alexander L’Estrange.

Acclaimed worldwide for their virtuosity, life-affirming energy and heart-gripping harmonies, The King’s Singers take you on a mesmerising musical trip from the Renaissance to now.

Courtney Act: Under the Covers

Courtney Act: Under the Covers

Courtney has been under the covers with many, but not usually in front of a live audience. It's time to get tucked in with all your favourite songs that have been covered in one way or another by all your favourite artists. Lay back and enjoy the caress of those romantic satin sheets as she strips some songs down and flips others on their back to show you just how gender fluid and genre fluid a great song can be! The sweet dreams Courtney spins will leave you pillow fighting and pillow biting.
