Fragile Masculinity, Handle With Care

Fragile Masculinity, Handle With Care

Samuel Leighton-Dore is a queer artist and writer based on the Gold Coast. With work spanning ceramics, painting, film and writing, Leighton-Dore is consistently interested in deconstructing and examining themes of sexuality, gender and mental health.

‘Fragile Masculinity, Handle With Care’ is Leighton-Dore's first solo exhibition and sees the artist incorporate contemporary ceramic pieces, acrylic paintings and multimedia works in order to tease popular notions of masculinity. Drawing inspiration from phrenology, a pseudomedicine popular in 19th century, as well as diagrams of the penis distributed by pharmaceutical brands including Viagra, Leighton-Dore presents a cynical portrait of the modern man while maintaining a lightheartedness that is inherently optimistic.

Confessions of a Mormon Boy

The international one-man sensation Confessions of a Mormon Boy comes to Australia!

This transformational true story of extremes–from perfect Mormon Boy in Utah to perfect Rent Boy in Manhattan–is told with humor, song, and unflinching honesty as outcast Oxy-Mormon and Outer Critics Circle Award Nominee, Steven Fales, ultimately finds a middle ground and learns what it means to finally come home. Based on original off-Broadway direction by Tony Award-winner Jack Hofsiss (The Elephant Man), this critically acclaimed 90-minute solo play has educated and entertained audiences across the US and around the world.

Booty: Jamie Cole

Booty: Jamie Cole

Step into the black light to uncover the chemical, fluorescent, heat map that is Jamie Cole's new exhibition 'Booty'.

Part of the visual arts programme of the 2019 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Booty will be radiating from the walls of Camperdown's prestigious Artsite Gallery from early February. Including mixed media works on Birchwood, canvas and soft sculptures, Jamie's sexually charged show comes with a warning, "don't see it alone (wink)".

Using precious materials, Jamie's Booty overflows with rich flock wallpaper, sweat, 'poppers', gold leaf, and opalescent foils, sprayed across the faces, bodies and bedrooms of men deep in the act.

You won't be disappointed but you might be aroused.

def: Booty (noun): "valuable stolen goods; something gained or won"

Jamie Cole presents 'Booty' (2-24 February 2019) FREE 18+ 11-5pm

About the Artist: Jamie Cole

Jamie is a full-time emerging artist living in Kiama on the south coast of New South Wales, with his husband Bruce.

Formerly a visual arts teacher, Jamie has been painting full-time now for 6 years and has exhibited extensively on the south coast; most recently as part of the 'Locals on Board' exhibition at the Art Gallery of Wollongong. Jamie's work is vibrant, immaculate and often filled with narrative. A modern day storyteller and artist, Jamie's work is highly influenced by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Together Jamie and Bruce own and operate a successful art gallery, tapas restaurant and wine bar in Kiama called the Little Blowhole Art Bar. The 'Art Bar' as it has become known, is a significant contributor to the dynamic and growing arts scene currently transforming this region. In January 2019, the Sydney Morning Herald listed the Art Bar as one of the top 31 attractions on the South Coast of New South Wales.
