Boys of Sondheim

Boys of Sondheim

Undeniably one of the most significant gay artists of the 20th century, Stephen Sondheim defined an urbane, literate and uniquely New York voice that many would call the most important in musical theatre history.

Credited with an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, Laurence Olivier Award and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom, Sondheim’s sweeping repertoire expresses the ache of the metropolitan man; his disappointments, his loves and his secrets.

Originally produced and presented at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of Melt 2017: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture, Boys of Sondheim is an intimate cabaret concert that will expose the soulful, masculine underbelly of Sondheim’s work.

Originally produced by Brisbane Powerhouse and Understudy Productions

Narrations by Anthony Nocera and Kris Stewart
Conceived and Directed by Kris Stewart
Choreographed by Kurt Phelan

Singer Blake Erickson
Singer James Lee
Singer Tyran Parke

Let's Eat Cake

Let's Eat Cake

Iconic queer photographer William Yang and long time Activist Rachel Evans will officially launch the Sydney Mardi Gras show LET’S EAT CAKE at Tortuga Gallery by artist Maylei Hunt.

The series is a historical and personal collection of street documentary images that follows the journey to marriage equality in Australia from 2009 to 2018. Images capture the vibrant fighting spirit of the LGBTI community and its allies marching together to demonstrate the support for equal marriage rights in Australia for all.

In 2009 Hunt attended her first marriage equality march and made a promise to herself that she would participate in as many marches for marriage equality as she could. Hunt always brought her camera with her, with the belief that “We needed to capture our journey of making history”.

The photographs follow marches in Sydney and Melbourne and capture key events such as the plebiscite announcement on 15th November 2017 and the Marriage Bill amendment at Parliament House on 7th December 2017 and with the additions of the celebrations afterwards by community.

The exhibition celebrates and allows the audience to reflect on the first year of marriage equality in Australia. Over eighty vibrantly colourful images of the community will cover the walls of the gallery. This is a large and ambitious series that captures our recent history.

The exhibition is accompanied by a 160 page hardcover book with over 120 colour images. It includes a foreword by Melbourne EQUAL LOVE convener Ali Hogg and an essay by Sydney marriage equality campaigner Rachel Evans. It has been produced as a limited edition of 300 copies published by the artist.

The LET’S EAT CAKE exhibition and book was produced to commemorate and to honour ALL those who have fought and marched for marriage equality. It is a record of a campaign that was won for the People by the People.

Artist Maylei Hunt is a Photomedia Artist, Community Arts worker and Teacher whose works have a strong connection to photographic documentation, storytelling, social justice and equality. Hunt is an alumni of National Art School Sydney, and has exhibited extensively in Sydney and Melbourne for over eighteen years and has works in various private and public collections.

Address: Tortuga Gallery. 31 Princes Hwy, St Peters NSW.

Opening Hours:  Tue-Wed 1.30- 4pm    Thur – Fri 10am-4pm     Sat 11am-4pm.
