The Organisation

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (SGLMG)  produces the world-famous festival of cultural, artistic, sporting, community and celebratory events raising the visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) communities.  SGLMG is supported by an active community membership, strategic government partners, and corporate and community sponsors resulting in a vital and complex organisation.

The Role

This high-profile CEO position, together with the Board, will be responsible for creating and implementing a new vision for SGLMG’s development and growth through festival programming, the world famous Parade and Party. You will create and deliver a sustainable business model through:

  • Best-practice strategic and operational management
  • Promoting the SGLMG brand and nurturing community, business and government stakeholders
  • Accountability for achieving performance and financial targets
  • Leading the organisation and its people through a period of renewal

Skills Required

You can demonstrate creativity, innovation and business acumen in the delivery of world-leading festivals, major events, the arts or destination tourism together with:

  • Energetic and inclusive operational and leadership style
  • High level networking across community, business and government stakeholders
  • Financial management  skills with capacity to identify, develop and grow revenues
  • Workforce development including engaging and retaining staff, volunteers and contractors

Parade Creative Consultants

The Parade Creative Consultants will provide consultancy services for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. Download a copy of the EOI.

Duties & Essential Job Functions

  1. Collaborate with Parade Entrants to inspire, advise and enable Parade entrants to reach their creative potential.
  2. Provide input/contribute content for the development by Parade for online and downloadable ‘how to’ guides and supplier lists.
  3. Collaborate and provide advice and services to the Producers and creative team during the creative implementation phases.
  4. Participate in developing a creative vision for the Parade that is aligned with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras’ brand, purpose, objects and fulfils the event’s creative brief adopting agreed creative planning process.
  5. Support the Parade Creative and Production Services teams to engage creative resources in support of entrants.
  6. Support the organisation by leveraging industry networks and contacts for technical and creative services.
  7. Advise and collaborate with the Parade Production team on the sequencing of the parade train by sequencing the entrants to deliver an experience that is greater than a collection of individual entrants.
  8. If requested, act as a spokesperson for the organisation’s creative purpose by inspiring entrants and garnering media attention particularly in mainstream press that supports Sydney Mardi Gras brand message,values and brand personality.
  9. Support the Parade Creative Services team to engage artists and resources in support of entrants.
  10. Support and assist participating LGBTI community groups with design, construction and assembly advice when using Mardi Gras Workshop.
  11. Collaborate with Workshop Manager regarding design and construction of SGLMG produced entries.

Key Challenges

  • Inspiring the community/parade entrants and creative teams to work together
  • Determining equitable access to Workshop and other creative resources for LGBTI community group access (e.g. fulfilment of specific criteria, first come, first served approach)
  • Inspiring the community/parade entrants to raise their creative standards given limited resources
  • Delivering a contemporary Parade with respect to the Parade’s history and culture
  • Actively contributing to, embracing and offering new learning experiences

Authority

  • This position will work closely with SGLMG Producers,m Production team, Workshop team, individual entrants and the creative services and community teams to maximise entrants messaging and realise their potential

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Performance and artistic experience of the highest calibre in line with scale and scope of the event of this nature
  • Proven experience in community engagement including working with diverse communities using a range of communication styles
  • Proven experience in relationship building and networking
  • Skilled in project and time management
  • Experience with projects in a not-for-profit or community based organisation
