> Mardi Gras Board members elected at AGM
> Motions passed at our AGM will be put to the Board
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras held our Annual General Meeting on Saturday. The Annual Report and Financial Report were presented to members and accepted.
The meeting included the election of four Board Members. The digital and in-person votes have now been counted and verified, confirming that two Board Members have been reinstated: Brandon-Leith Bear and James Brechney. They will be joined by two new Board members: Kat Dopper and Jesse Matheson.
Previous Board members continuing their two-year term are: Fran Bowron, Damien Hodgkinson, Silke Bader and Aidan Read.
At our AGM, two motions from members present were passed from the floor.
The motions must be approved by the Board before further action is taken.
(1) The AGM of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras does not believe that a Prime Minister who denies us equality should be welcome as an official guest at our parade. We ask the Board to act in accordance with this position and issue a public statement as it applies to the current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the 2017 Mardi Gras parade and does not invite him as an official guest to the parade.
(2) Endorsement of marriage equality rally. The AGM urgently request the board to call on the government to put and pass a marriage equality bill, and does not believe equality should be delayed. Accordingly, we encourage SGLMG to endorse the upcoming marriage equality on 1pm Saturday November 26 at Town Hall, and will publicly encourage all SGLMG members and supporters to attend the rally.
Since the AGM, we’ve heard a vast amount of feedback about these motions from our members, and from the wider community. Thank you for getting in contact, your voices have been heard and your opinions matter greatly to us.
The new Board of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will have their first meeting this week. One of the first agenda items will be to discuss the motions and to confirm any future action. We will update our members as soon as possible after the meeting.
