You can tell a lot about a man by the way he wears his hanky…

In the 1970s gay men developed a form of communication to signal their intentions, fetishes, desires and identity to potential sexual partners by wearing varied colour handkerchiefs.

TROUGH X’s provocative images, short films and installations investigate and explore the gay subcultures of “hanky codes” from a contemporary perspective.

Created and produced by Nik Dimopoulos and John Tsiavis, combinating their experiences as art director/graphic designer and photographer/director, this visual arts event derives from Melbourne's iconic underground men-only dance parties of the same name.

"John Tsiavis's and Nik Dimopoulos's expressionistic photographs exploring contemporary masculinity and queer identity are coolly cerebral in their layered symbolism and controlled choreography, and equally hot in the febrile skin sensitivity they strongly evoke. They are dynamic and bold images of queer male identity." Dr Christopher Chapman, Curator, National Portrait Gallery, Canberra

As well as viewing this stunning exhibition, those interested can attend a 'Meet The Artists Talk', hosted by Dr Christopher Chapman, Curator of the National Portrait Gallery. This will be held on Staurday 25th February, 2pm-3pm.
