In the new exhibition Iridescent by Gerwyn Davies, queer photographic artist and costume maker Gerwyn Davies responds to and reimagines the museums, archives, historic houses and gardens under the care of Sydney Living Museums and NSW State Archives.

In a series of 12 large-scale photographic works, Davies dramatically transforms each property into a stage on which an extravagant performance is played out for the camera by the artist as a vividly costumed character.

Rather than recount the familiar histories of these properties, Davies draws out and reinterprets the whispers and fragments of their lesser-known stories. Costume and camera are used to conjure a range of fantastic figures, each one celebrating subplots and embellishing inferences scribbled in the margins of these site’s official histories.

At the Museum of Sydney, Davies’s costumes will be displayed alongside his photographic works for the first time.

Available from 19 February till 24 April 2022, from Thursday to Sunday 10am-5pm.

Looking for more? Join us on 1 March for Queering The Houses: In Conversation with Gerwyn Davis

Delight in an evening of fabulous storytelling as we invite queer photographer and costume maker Gerwyn Davies to share some of the historical inspirations for his exhibition, Iridescent by Gerwyn Davies.

In the exhibition, Gerwyn responds to and reimagines the museums, archives, historic houses and gardens under the care of Sydney Living Museums and NSW State Archives, dramatically transforming each property into a stage on which an extravagant performance is played out for the camera by a vividly costumed character.

We invite you to join us in the opulent setting of Elizabeth Bay House, where a 7-foot-tall, fur-clad, canary-yellow beast burst from the confines of Alexander Macleay’s entomological collection to be photographed in epic style for the exhibition. Gerwyn will be joined by Mel Flyte, Assistant Curator at Sydney Living Museums, to discuss some of the lesser-known stories of our properties and how these have inspired the dramatic costumes and tableaus in Gerwyn’s work.

$40 ticket price includes drink on arrival plus entry ticket to view the Iridescent exhibition at the Museum of Sydney.
