Iconic queer photographer William Yang and long time Activist Rachel Evans will officially launch the Sydney Mardi Gras show LET’S EAT CAKE at Tortuga Gallery by artist Maylei Hunt.
The series is a historical and personal collection of street documentary images that follows the journey to marriage equality in Australia from 2009 to 2018. Images capture the vibrant fighting spirit of the LGBTI community and its allies marching together to demonstrate the support for equal marriage rights in Australia for all.
In 2009 Hunt attended her first marriage equality march and made a promise to herself that she would participate in as many marches for marriage equality as she could. Hunt always brought her camera with her, with the belief that “We needed to capture our journey of making history”.
The photographs follow marches in Sydney and Melbourne and capture key events such as the plebiscite announcement on 15th November 2017 and the Marriage Bill amendment at Parliament House on 7th December 2017 and with the additions of the celebrations afterwards by community.
The exhibition celebrates and allows the audience to reflect on the first year of marriage equality in Australia. Over eighty vibrantly colourful images of the community will cover the walls of the gallery. This is a large and ambitious series that captures our recent history.
The exhibition is accompanied by a 160 page hardcover book with over 120 colour images. It includes a foreword by Melbourne EQUAL LOVE convener Ali Hogg and an essay by Sydney marriage equality campaigner Rachel Evans. It has been produced as a limited edition of 300 copies published by the artist.
The LET’S EAT CAKE exhibition and book was produced to commemorate and to honour ALL those who have fought and marched for marriage equality. It is a record of a campaign that was won for the People by the People.
