Tim McKew - A Queer Life on the World Stage
Tim McKew grew up in a working-class Irish Catholic family in the sixties, when the dye was cast for this wunderkind with a golden voice who became a child TV star. In his mid-teens in 1971, under the advice of the Catholic Church and psychiatric authorities, he was given shock treatment to rewire his gay brain. This set the path for Tim, who became a queer cabaret anarchist and performance artist in the mid-seventies.
We invite you to come on this biographical journey of one of Australia’s unsung queer heroes! A queer trailblazer, he took his performance art to shop window fronts in Collins Street, University campuses and Tolarno Galleries Melbourne, the Gay All Stars International Festival at the Berlin Wall, and the legendary Blitz Club in London. He performed with Louis Nowra, was a part of the punk scene supporting Nick Cave, and jammed with Nina Hagen in Berlin.
