Perhaps there’s no art subject more depicted - and yet at the same time taboo – than the vagina. Since the dawn of time, man has created sculptures of lady parts, yet it remains a shocking or often censored subject.

Pioneering feminist artists like Betty Dodson and Judy Chicago set the vagina agenda with paradigm-shifting works unapologetically representing the vulva in all its glory.

Contemporary male artists (like Jamie McCartney’s 2006 Great Wall of Vagina, and Greg Taylor’s 2009 CUNTS… and other conversations), have attempted to resurrect the vagina as subject matter – albeit with a distinctly male gaze – and in a manner designed to provoke.

But where are the female artists reimagining the vaginal theme for a new generation?

Enter Katie Lloyd, painting and drawing the vagina in ways aligned with her own feminine essence and ensuring ‘Yoni Art’ is emerging as one of art’s most profound and empowering trends.

’Yoni’, is a Sanskrit word for the internal and external reproductive organs of the female body, e.g., the womb, vulva and vagina.

By placing yonis at the centre of her work, Katie shines a light on female sex and sexuality, their bodies, and the importance of gender positivity. In fact, some Yoni Art even challenges the notion of gender altogether, instead choosing to focus on the yoni as a beautiful, intimate, and human part of the body as opposed to being gender specific.

Part feminist statement, part goddess worship, Yoni Art is empowering women, one vulva at a time.
