It’s official! Our bid for Sydney to host WorldPride 2023 has been received by the InterPride network, formalising our candidacy to host the marquee international LGBTQI pride event which happens in a different city every two years.

Marking 50 years since the Stonewall uprising began, New York City hosted WorldPride this year and a feisty group of Aussies entered the NYC Pride March.

2021’s WorldPride will be hosted by Copenhagen, and for 2023 Sydney is in the running along with Montreal and Houston. The final decision on the host city will be made by the members of InterPride this October at their AGM in Athens.

Lively crews of Australian volunteers have been popping up with their FEARLESS t-shirts and banners promoting Sydney at Pride in London, EuroPride in Vienna, Long Island Pride, Madrid Pride, Salzberg Pride, Brazil Pride Conference and Graz Pride Parade. There’s many more to come!

WHY SYDNEY?

2023 in Sydney offers a unique opportunity to be part of Pride history: the first WorldPride in the southern hemisphere and the 50th Anniversary of the first Australian Gay Pride Week.

Our bid to host WorldPride 2023 is about much more than Sydney and Australia. It’s about the Asia-Pacific, one of InterPride’s most diverse regions that is home to 60% of the world’s population, yet too often overlooked and under-represented. The vast majority of LGBTQI communities within this region are denied fundamental human rights.

Sydney WorldPride 2023 will be the global event that unites LGBTQI communities and Prides from across the world and brings them to the Asia-Pacific. WorldPride in Sydney will be an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of culture and identity in this unique region, while we shine a light on the widespread human rights abuses faced by our regional neighbours.

Sydney is a safe, accessible and affordable hub for many people across the Asia-Pacific who wouldn’t otherwise be able to celebrate Pride on a global level. Together, we will listen and learn from some of the most isolated LGBTQI communities in the world, celebrate as one and show bold leadership as activists into the future – and we’ll do it FEARLESSLY.

ARE YOU MULTI-LINGUAL?

We’re telling the world about our Sydney 2023 bid, and we’d be grateful for help from people with language skills. Volunteers are needed to translate our bid brochure – and we’d love keen speakers of other languages to appear in a video we’re editing together where we welcome all the world to Sydney. To get involved, please email matt.akersten@mardigrasarts.org.au.
