Our community has a proud history of banding together, and rising up against discrimination. Our ability to unite, stand up and speak out is the only reason we have come so far. It’s the reason we had such an enormous win three years ago, when our country voted for love, fairness and equality.
But despite how far we've come, we don’t have equality yet. Private schools can still expel students and fire teachers because of who they are or whom they love. In NSW, Qld and WA trans people cannot obtain ID documents that reflect who they are without undergoing surgery or medical treatment. There are no laws to protect people born with intersex variations from unnecessary and deferrable surgeries or medical interventions before they’re old enough to consent. In most states, harmful conversion practices are still legal.
That’s why Mardi Gras and Equality Australia are committing to Rise for Equality together. We’re making a pledge, and we want you to be part of it too.
We pledge to:
By signing the pledge, we’ll keep you updated on actions you can take throughout the year to make sure we achieve equality for all of us. If you can't see the form below, click here.
After you've signed the pledge, we’d love it if you could share this image on your social media, to let everyone know you've signed the pledge and to encourage them to sign it too!
