Luc Velez (he/him)

Luc is an organiser, law student and socialist, working and living on stolen Gadigal Land. He began political organising through the environmental movement, first as a fashion student organising within the industry, and later with Sydney-based student groups, including the Australian Student Environmental Network. Luc then went on to serve as National Education Officer of the National Union of Students, organising campaigns with thousands of students around free education, climate justice, student poverty, and workers' rights.

Luc believes that the worlds history is one of resistance and activism. He has said - "as we continue the legacy of the queer activists who came before us, we must remember that we can't liberate ourselves from homophobia or transphobia as individuals, and we will never be free while others continue to be oppressed. The structures that we are fighting also reinforce misogyny, racism, white supremacy and colonialism - they create billionaires by ensuring poverty. Supporting each other is not an act of charity, but a recognition that our liberation is tied up together."

Luc is committed to continuing the work of generations of activists in and out of Mardi Gras - building stronger movements through solidarity.
