Creating Queer Futures: Zine-Making Workshop

This event invites people to imagine radical and joyful queer futures through zine-making. A zine is an alternative and hand-made mini-magazine that can contain writing and creative visuals of any kind. Zines have a long history in LGBTQIA+ communities and continue to be a powerful way that queer people share information, art and stories of their lives. This free event invites people to build on this history and make their own queer zines that paint a picture of their wants, hopes and dreams for the future. We will provide creative materials and a photocopier so people can make and share their zines during Mardi Gras and throughout their community networks. We will also ask people to donate a copy of the zines they make, and with these we will create a queer zine library/archive that collects the diverse visions that people have for the future.

The significance of zine-making in queer communities is multifaceted. Zines provide a simple creative way for people to share their personal stories, experiences and perspectives. They allow for creative self-expression and can increase the visibility of diverse and underrepresented LGBTQIA+SB voices and issues. As an alternative to mainstream publishing, zines allow people to share their work directly with others, from their own hand to the hands of readers. This DIY approach fosters creativity and independence. Zine-making is also a communal activity, bringing together people to share in each other’s experiences and build a sense of belonging. Workshops like these create rich opportunities for networking, community engagement, and sharing stories.
